The planned affordable housing at the Tannery Arts Center (TAC), 1040 River Street in Santa Cruz, is on the site of a 19th century tannery on the bank of the San Lorenzo River. The development will consist of 100 units of new construction over parking. Spaces will have high ceilings, flexible floorplans, large windows and durable surfaces. The project will serve individuals and their families earning less than 30%, 40% and 50% of area median income. Construction will begin in August 2007 with occupancy scheduled for early 2009.
The renovation of the Tannery's historic buildings is scheduled to begin mid 2008 with occupancy in 2009. These buildings will provide work space for painters, sculptors, musicians, photographers, artisans and many other creative activities.
With 100 live/work units, and potential for 100 work-only studio spaces, the TAC will have the critical mass necessary for development of successful cooperative and/or commercial galleries. Extensive indoor and outdoor open spaces could accommodate a wide variety of exhibitions/events including but not limited to visual, literary and the performing arts.
