Bell Artspace Campus Breaks Ground!

Speaking at the ground breaking.

On April 14, Artspace staff and members of the Board of Directors gathered with residents of the Tremé community in New Orleans to celebrate the long-awaited groundbreaking of the Bell Artspace Campus. New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu and other speakers praised the project as a true community effort. We were thrilled to be joined by partners from Providence Community Housing, Ashe Cultural Center, Junebug Theater, the New Orleans Master Crafts Guild and Make Music NOLA, among others.

The ceremony, with Artspace’s traditional art shovels, took place in front of the main building on Urselines Avenue, which was built in the late 19th century by the Sisters of St. Joseph, who operated it as a school for girls until 1960, when it was turned over to the Orleans Parish School Board. Several of the Sisters were able to join us for the celebration, saying they’re eager to see the transformation of the former school into a home for artists in the heart of Tremé. Construction will begin soon, and we'll continue to bring you updates!
